October 2007

Dear Reader,

This issue of Insights highlights printing resources.

There are significant new developments in the fast-changing printing industry.

Epson has announced an advance on their Ultrachrome K3 inkset (Vivid Magenta ink) and new compatible printers - 4880, 7880, 9880, and 11880. The Epson 11880 is the best printer I've ever used.

Adobe Photoshop CS3's Print window has evolved. All of my PDFs this impacts have been updated.

New substrates become available frequently. A new PDF discussing criteria to evaluate them has been recently posted.

PhotoPlus East is coming to NYC Oct 18-20. It showcases new product and samples on the tradeshow floor and provides training in many seminars. I'm involved in the following seminars - a special session of The Epson Print Academy, poster signings at the Epson booth, the latest version of my seminar Professional Inkjet Printing and a new seminar The Lightroom Print Module at the Adobe booth.

You can learn about and use all of the featured items in my upcoming workshops.

Due to poplular demand, I'm offering a new workshop for the first time - The Fine Digital Print II (next date December 3-7, 2007). It's the follow up to my most popular workshop The Fine Digital Print I(next date December 3-7, 2007) - a continually evolving workshop now in it's 12th year. What's the difference between the two? FDP II is more advanced, tailored to individual participants, involves extensive reviews of work both brought and done during the week, encourages more collaboration and feedback with other participants, discusses presenting and marketing your work, and emphasizes printing a larger number of exhibition quality prints. This is the last chance for the 15% early registration discount for both workshops. If you'd like to take either workshop, register now - space is limited.

Best wishes,

John Paul

Evaluating Success

Specify your standards for success to help you realize how far you've come and when you've arrived. Identify your standards before you begin projects. When you see your criteria, you may refine them, setting an even better course. With the clarity that comes from creating and organizing a list, you'll be more likely to set an effective action plan to achieve each goal. New ideas will emerge!
Here are a few tips to setting standards for success.

1 - Keep it simple. You'll understand your standards better and be able to share them with others more easily.
2 - Make it measurable. You'll be able to make more objective evaluations during and after your efforts.
3 - Seek support. Collaborate with others who have additional skills. They'll be able to help you accomplish specific tasks more successfully. They may also provide you with useful feedback.
4 - Celebrate success. Before moving on, enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done and reenergize, both with yourself and with others.
5 - Review and revise. Take time to evaluate your progress both during and after a project. Course correction is both the secret to getting there and to going farther.

Identifying your standards for success doesn't keep you from exceeding them (quite the opposite), it will help you find useful perspectives and enjoy the successes you have achieved. _________________________________________________________

Workshop
The Fine Digital Print II
December 3 - 7

This is the most advanced printmaking workshop I've ever taught. The knowledge base outlined in The Fine Digital Print I is assumed. Lightning fast reviews get participants on the same page. This allows us to address even more advanced techniques, such as addressing the limits of color management and rediscovering the lost art of proofing. This also allows us to be more creative, putting the tools to use for each individual's unique sensibilities. There are no formulas here, only dynamic strategies for solving problems in unique ways. In addition we'll discuss presenting and marketing your work. Extensive reviews of individual participants work sets the stage for our collaborative efforts.

Identify what's unique about your vision, start producing a refined body of work, and leave with exhibition quality prints in this workshop. You'll not only produce the finest digital prints possible, you'll see your images in new ways.
