This month's issue of Insights highlights color exercise files. They complement my apple.com column on color -www.apple.com/pro/color/tools/caponigro/. To sharpen our skills of perception and better understand the dynamics of color, we use these test files in my Power of Color workshops. You can too. Instructions on how to use them are contained in the files themselves with individual Notes.
Like the test files posted last month, these exercise files are for subscribers only! Your user name is insights. Your password is jpcsubscribe. Both are case sensitive - all lower case, no spaces. Save this issue or write this down for future reference. Due to a high volume of requests for information I won't be able to send individual reminders, though I will include reminders in future issues (like this one) when more subscriber only content is posted.
Also featured are An Artist's Palette, a review of CHROMiX ColorThink software, Andrew Rodney's Color Management for Photographers, and the results for the PhotoSPIVA 2007 awards I recently juried.
Best wishes,
John Paul

Creativity
Look at Things from Many Perspectives
One of the hallmarks of creativity is the ability to look at things from many perspectives, both conventional and unconventional. Often taking a different tack when engaging a problem reveals dimensions, relationships, insights, and solutions that might otherwise remain hidden. If you're looking for something new, in order to find it, you have to look in new ways. Spend a little time exploring your options so you can be sure you devote yourself to the best approach available.

Workshop

The Power of Color
August 31 - Sept 3
This four day extended weekend workshop at a new time and in a new format is one of my most popular workshops and seminars. It consolidates the history of color practices in the visual arts and pulls that material forward into the 21st century, offering a new set of practices and a new perspective on a timeless theme. Participants learn new ways of seeing, describing, and controlling.
April's Power of Color workshop was a big success. Participants, 60% of whom were alumni, gave it high praise. "I really like the approach - well organized sessions thoughtfully prepared as well as open discussions." "I have a much more expanded perspective on color." "You've pushed us and stretched our minds in new directions." "In content and practice Caponigro's workshops excel any other workshop in the medium."

An Artist's Palette
One of the most distinctive things about an artist's work is his or her use of color. Using a consistent palette is one of the keys to developing a signature style. It's very helpful to identify what makes your use of color distinctive or even unique. Use the following concepts and accompanying chart to help you identify your palette. You can also use the chart to analyze another artist's palette. Try both; you'll find that you will better understand color in general as a result.

Color Theory
What's color theory? It's a conceptual framework and language used to describe color relationships, which artists have been using for centuries. Like so many other fields, it's evolution is being accelerated with the introduction of computers. Find out more about in this PDF.

Review
Color Management for
Photographers
Andrew Rodney's Color Management for Photographers is an excellent book. Andrew's understanding and explanations of color management are among the very best in the industry. With clean graphics and insightful illustrations he clearly outlines how to achieve desired results and gives hands on step-by-step instructions on how to do it. The CD with tutorials and test files is particularly useful. I highly recommend it.

Event
PhotoSPIVA 2007
In March I had the pleasure of judging the 2007 PhotoSPIVA awards, the oldest continuous U.S. national photographic competition. Located in Joplin, MO, since 1947 PhotoSpiva promotes the arts and educates diverse audiences within a four-state region. The list of past jurors for this event is distinguished and includes the likes of Keith Carter, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, Mary Virginia Swanson, Therese Mulligan and many more. The quality of much of the work submitted was quite high. Award winners include Regan Avery (1st Place), Larry Chait (2nd Place), Gloria Baker Feinstein (3rd Place) and seven honorable mention and merit awards. The exhibition drawn from work submitted by over 100 artists is now on display through June 22 and online for an extended engagement.
