Recipe for a long and happy life. 1 Never get used to anything. 2 Hold on to the child in you. 3 Keep your curiosity alive. 4 Trust your intuition. 5 Delight in simple things. 6 Say "yes" to life with passion. 7 Fall madly in love with the world. 8 Remember: Today is the day! - Ruth Bernhard

Every item in Ruth Bernhard's recipe applies to being more creative as well as being more vital. I'm convinced there's a strong connection between creativity and vitality. We lost many stars in the diverse world of photography last year; including Ruth Bernhard, Arnold Newman, and Bruce Fraser. Some of us knew them, some knew of them, some don't know of them - yet. We stand on the shoulders of giants. We are enriched by and profit from those who have passed before us. Often we do so, without even knowing it. It's useful to search through our influences; there are times when it helps to know the source. And, a few moments of gratitude for all we have received are moments well spent. I send out heartfelt thanks to all.

Dialog - John Sexton

This conversation between John Sexton and John Paul. It was featured in the November 2000 issue of View Camera and is posted for the first time here, now. The conversation took place shortly before the release of his last book - Places of Power. John recently released a new book - Recollections. John is currently offering his new book by itself or bundled with a print at an exceptional discount on his website - www.johnsexton.com. You may also enjoy finding out more about John by visiting luminous-lint.com, an exciting new history of photography website I'm currently collaborating with. John is one of the finest silver gelatin printmakers working today. He's been keeping a keen eye on digital printmaking, but hasn't made the transition yet. Every year he gets closer and closer. I always enjoy our conversations with one another.

Creativity - Train of Thought

A slideshow is an excellent way to identify your shooting habits and the ways you tend to think visually. This will help you better understand your working methods and your work. With this knowledge you'll find it easier to get out of ruts and into your groove, maybe even a new groove.
